Hollywood films are released with much fanfare but very few match the hype as far as Indian box office is concerned.
Distributed in India by Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation’s live action How To Train Your Dragon (2025) got mixed views from critics, faced competition from both Bollywood (Housefull 5) and the much fancied Ballerina (2025), yet it had an impressive opening weekend at the Indian box office.
The film opened to an impressive ₹14 crore weekend in India, making it the biggest opening ever for the How to Train Your Dragon franchise in the country, as claimed by the film’s publicists. It’s also the biggest family film opening of the year, and the fifth biggest MPA opening in 2025 so far.
Audiences across the globe are embracing the film’s emotional depth, visual magic, and the joy of seeing Hiccup and Toothless on the big screen again. In India, premium formats played a big role in its success — with IMAX alone bringing in 21% of the total collection.
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid, reimagining the much-loved DreamWorks story for a new generation.
The franchise, which previously featured three animated films, has now jumped on the live-action bandwagon.
