On the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, Suraksha Diagnostic Limited (“Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics”) hosted a special awareness event at its NKDA Centre in Kolkata to spotlight the growing burden of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in India. Today it is important to realise that because of the prevalence of bad dietary habits, lack of physical exercise, excessive addiction to screen time, we are endangering ourselves massively. The incidence of Fatty Liver disease in India is at 30-40%. Every step needs to be taken now to prevent this from turning into another major social burden. The event featured top hepatologists who emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, lifestyle change, and broader access to liver health diagnostics.
The session was led by two of the most respected voices in hepatology:
Prof. Dr. K. D. Biswas, Head of Department, Hepatology & Gastroenterology, Medical College Kolkata, Dr. Vikash Prakash, Consultant, Liver & Gastrointestinal Diseases; DM (Gold Medalist, ILBS New Delhi); Young Investigator Award Recipient, AASLD, Boston (USA)
The experts discussed the silent progression of NAFLD into more advanced liver conditions such as MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease) and MASH (Metabolic associated steatohepatitis), which may eventually lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver failure. They stressed that timely screening and lifestyle changes are vital to reverse this growing health threat.
Dr. Somnath Chatterjee, Chairman & Joint Managing Director, Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics, explained:“Our focus is on Fatty Liver. This by all facts is endemic in India. So our effort is to make the population aware of this. We will suggest lifestyle changes to prevent this. Also, we will inform you about the diagnostics available for this and will introduce a package for it.”
In alignment with this awareness drive, Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics launched “Liver Insight,” a dedicated screening package designed to support early identification and clinical evaluation of liver health. The package includes:
-
Liver Function Test (LFT)
-
HBsAg, Anti-HCV, HAV IgM, HEV IgM
-
Sugar, Lipid Profile
-
Liver Elastography (Fibrosis Scan)
Designed to assist both clinicians and patients in early diagnosis, this diagnostic package, which costs INR 12,200, is being made available at a special promotional rate of INR 6100 with a 50% discount, along with same-day report delivery at select centres. This initiative reinforces Suraksha’s commitment to accessible and preventive healthcare.
Ms. Ritu Mittal, Joint Managing Director & CEO, added: “We are committed to raising awareness about liver health. ‘Liver Insight’ reflects our belief in proactive diagnostics—making early detection easier, affordable, and more approachable for everyone.”
World Hepatitis Day 2025: “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down”
World Hepatitis Day, observed globally on July 28, aims to raise awareness around hepatitis A to E, while promoting testing, vaccination, and treatment. The 2025 theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” urges communities to eliminate stigma and barriers that hinder access to care.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people live with hepatitis globally, and 1.3 million die each year from liver-related complications. In India, Fatty Liver affects between 9% and 53% of the population—making awareness campaigns and preventive diagnostics like Liver Insight crucial for improving liver health outcomes.
