Zimmer Biomet Holdings has announced the launch of Tekcem 1G and Tekcem 3G antibiotic bone cements in India. The TEKCEM G bone cements are intended for prosthesis fixation to living bone in arthroplasty procedures and joint reconstruction following trauma, including primary and revision surgeries.
The formulations incorporate gentamicin (1G), which is known for its antibacterial properties, offering defence against infections. The cement formulation is designed to release lower levels of monomer, reducing toxicity and shrinkage. This supports implant fixation and helps in minimising the risk of monomer shock.
Gentamicin is a bactericidal, broad-spectrum antibiotic with hydrophilic properties. It is used to treat Gram-positive and Gram-negative infections, including pathogenic species such as Escherichia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella, Serratia, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Zimmer Biomet has stated that Tekcem 1G has high viscosity, making it suitable for knee arthroplasties. The formulation also features low exothermicity, with a temperature of 68.9°C, reducing the risk of necrosis.
Tekcem is certified under the European MDR (Medical Device Regulation), aligning with regulatory standards.
